Important development for members and prospective members of the world’s leading organisation for the coaching profession.

I have been a coach for many years.

I have had many hundreds of hours of training, predominantly in NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP) but also in other forms of personal and professional development, and I have attended some advanced coaching courses.

I have been teaching coaching internationally for six years.

I have been a member of the International Coach Federation (and IAC) for many years as I believe in supporting relevant professional bodies.

I have attended the annual ICF international conferences since 2006, and I am heading out to Las Vegas next week.

However, I have never followed a formal programme leading to an ICF credential and do not wish to do so at this stage in my career.

According to the new ICF Membership Eligibility Requirements I shall not be able to remain a member after April 1 2013 unless I have completed 60 hours of coach specific training.

Between April 2012 and April 2013 I shall become a provisional member. If I do not complete 60 hours of approved coach specific training, then I shall have to leave the ICF.

Are you a member of the ICF? Do you wish to join the ICF?

If so, then you will be affected by the new membership eligibility requirements.

You, too, will have to complete 60 hours of coach specific training within 12 months, which must meet the minimum eligibility requirements for ICF membership and be aligned with the requirements for the ACC Portfolio Application credential path.

Coach specific training is defined as:

Training from an ICF Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP) or a program that has received the ICF Approved Coach Specific Training Hours (ACSTH) designation; or

Training that is specifically marketed as teaching coaching skills and behaviours, teaches how to apply technical skills in a coach-like manner, and transfers those skills in accordance with the ICF Core Coaching Competencies.

For those of you who wish to join the ICF, you will only be able to do so for one year (as a student member), or after you have completed the 60 hours of approved training.

After you have completed the 60 hours of coach specific training, you will become a ‘Coach Member’ until you earn an ICF credential, when you will become a ‘Credentialed Coach Member’.

I strongly support the concept that coaches should obtain quality training and that they should commit to a programme of continuing professional development. However, many professional organisations have a place for unqualified ‘associates’ who wish to support the profession or who are on a journey towards qualification. This is not usually limited to 12 months, and I foresee a major haemorrhaging of ICF members and consequent loss of support. This profession needs everybody’s support.

Find out more about the new ICF membership eligibility requirements.

When I met Deepak Chopra recently he told us about happiness. Apparently, we are programmed to naturally complain, or to see opportunities.

50% of this programming is determined in the first three years of life, though it can be changed with time and application.

The other 50% is more directly under our own control. It depends on our conditions for living – do we have enough, or, rather, do we believe that we have enough?

What voluntary choices do we make; how do we obtain personal pleasure; how do we achieve meaning and fulfilment; what is our purpose; how do we express our creativity?

He suggested that we could increase our sense of community by attending organised events, connecting with people with shared passions and volunteering for four hours a week.

Today I listened to a Buddhist talking about karma. We create our own karma, he said. An act can become a habit. Habit can form character and character influences destiny.

So, start with small changes …

In this week’s coaching notes I have given you a series of questions that Deepak Chopra suggests will help change the way your brain works. Ask these questions daily and you are on the way to creating your destiny.

You can also read about Andrew Halfacre’s new book, which will be given to every delegate at Invisible Coaching, on 18-19 June. I have also announced an extra special partner deal for two people booking together.

The word is getting around and already we have bookings from Scandinavia and Africa.

It has been withdrawn because it has been substantially updated and now relaunched in a new form.

Andrew’s first version was so significantly improved and extended that I suggested to him that he should turn it into a book.

I put him in touch with Jo Gregory of publisher Bookshaker. My proposals for the structure of the book have been completely changed, though I have been privileged to be consulted on the editing. Further, I was honoured to to be invited to write the foreword.

You can imagine our excitement now that finished copies are available on Amazon.

I look forward to receiving a review copy. In the meantime, you can find out all about it at firstknowwhatyouwant and download the introduction.

The authors in “The Wealth Garden” are connected by a desire to make a difference in the world. That’s why we’re delighted to announce that when you buy a copy of “The Wealth Garden”, a wealth-building teacher automatically receives two weeks’ training, thanks to the inspired work of The SAGE Foundation, whose work in India has been given special recognition by The Clinton Global Initiative.

The Sage Foundation seeks to build sustainable communities that provide enlightened education for children and wealth generating skills training for their families for creating extraordinary lives.

Looking at a holistic approach, SAGE attempts to enhance living conditions through quality education and social empowerment, focusing on health, environment and eradication of poverty. SAGE has started by adopting major slums in Mumbai and one hundred villages. Known for ethical excellence, its greatest strength is its credibility, visibility and networking base.

It will also focus on microfinance and creating self-help groups to empower women in small scale industries like making pickles, sauces and chutneys, for which ties are being created with organizations like Extraordinary Ones for buying their products.

The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) convenes global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Since 2005, CGI members have made nearly 1,200 commitments valued at $46 billion. Already these commitments have impacted more than 200 million lives in 150 countries.

The Institute of Directors asks: What are the competitive advantages for those companies who do not cut training spend in a recession?

To ensure that your business is well-positioned when the economy starts to recover. Those businesses that do not survive will open up market share to those who do.

To remain competitive. If your employees are knowledgeable and motivated, they will find new ways of generating revenue.

To understand your customers’ buying habits and how to build on their loyalty. You need to maintain repeat business in a recession.

To enable your employees to stand back from the day-to-day operations and understand the strategic implications of their work.

It sends one of the most powerful messages to your employees – that they are valued. When your employees are anxious about job security, it is more important than ever to demonstrate a commitment to them.

To avoid a long term skills shortage among your employees. UK businesses are still recovering from skills lost during the 1990s recession due to poor investment.

Training increases productivity in the short term, as well as the long term. The sooner you engage your staff, the earlier you can address and deal with the impact of the recession.

According to the Institute of Directors, a report published by Cranfield School of Management claims that investing in training not only saves money, but is more effective than external recruitment. Three quarters of the 1,189 companies involved in the study felt that training their own staff was more beneficial to their business. Almost half actually saved money, with one-third of the companies benefiting from increased staff motivation. It also found that half the companies enjoyed improved staff retention.
