Life planning instructions – Michael Skirving
This process will support you in creating the kind of life you truly want. It is best done at change points in your life and on a regular yearly basis. Remember that maintaining a gap between how your life is and how you would rather have it be will give your unconsciousness the opportunity, to make the learning’s that will get you there.
You can do this on your own, though it is more fun and more effective if you do it with a partner. To do this thoroughly allow about three hours each way with one in client role and the other in facilitator role. The client chooses how they want the facilitator to operate e.g. listen, scribe, free hand to interview as they choose, be very ‘interactionist’ etc.
Having set up the session, these are the 7 basic steps:
- Client clarifies how they want the facilitator to operate.
- Agree session length, typically between one and three hours each way.
- Agree the life areas you want to consider.
- Map the time frames and life areas onto a sheet of paper forming a grid of all combinations of time frames and life areas. Download a grid template here.
- Enjoy filling in the grid, making liberal use of resources, as if, facilitator, breaks etc.
- Finally decide where you will keep it to look at in future.
Agree the time frames you wish to consider.
Usually three, although two is good for a short session.
What is the longest time frame you want to consider
(eg 1,10, or 25 years). What is the shortest time frame you want to consider
(eg 1 month, 6 months,1 year). What is the medium time frame you want to consider
Aim for the seven most important areas of your life. If you go above nine it takes longer and seems to lose effectiveness.
What chunks to divide your life up into is a personal decision that only you can make and will change with time anyway.
Just to get you started here are some life chunks that are often used: Physical, emotional, spiritual, home, work, relationships, money.
It is important that you make up your own life chunks and check that they feel right for you.
