Last week we were at HRD 2006, the Learning and Development Conference and Exhibition. It was very quiet this year, but as a result we were able to spend quality time meeting readers and getting to know new contacts.
One of the themes that emerged from our discussions was the need to focus on one specialism. This is a consistent message in practice building, but it was also feedback from potential clients. They want 'experts'. I read a while back that it takes 14 years to achieve mastery, regardless of whether you wish to play a violin or become a lawyer. So, one of the best things you can advise others – and follow yourself – is to discover what you can be good at; and then really go for it. Focus on it, practise it and refine it.
Sometimes, whatever we focus on, we can face bad news. We have recently been involved in a major redundancy exercise to provide career support programme for those losing their jobs. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross has been credited with developing a model for change which is useful in such circumstances – see this week's Coaching Notes.
On Tuesday I return to Dubai to attend GETEX, the Gulf Education & Training Exhibition. As ever, if you are anywhere nearby and would like to meet up, please contact me.
Next week is a celebration of the birthday of the prophet Mohammed, and at the end of the week it is Easter. Next weekend, therefore, I have a rest – no Corporatecoach will be published. But on the 24th we shall release full details of our exciting new 'Brefi Network'. Watch this space!
