Internet strategy – how to develop an effective strategy

strategy consulting consultancyAn Internet strategy is essential for every company. Increasingly, all companies need one. Whether you are old economy or new economy, or "clicks and bricks", the Internet will impact on your business. Even if your strategy is to do nothing, it is worth deciding so. It is too late to ignore the Internet.

What Internet strategy do you want? Do you want to build a web site? A dotcom? Do you want to include e-commerce, e-business, e-learning or e-publishing? The first step is to identify the overall goals of the business. See business planning and strategy planning. Then decide how your web strategy will address these goals and complement your off-line plans.

An Interent strategy should include:–

  • specific business goals
  • objectives for Internet activity
  • a programme of actions that will achieve business goals
  • benchmarks for measuring achievement
  • business model – what it will cost and what it will achieve

What can you use the Internet for?

Remember, the Internet includes e-mail, discussion groups, bulletin boards, newsletters etc, as well as the World Wide Web.

So what are you trying to achieve? Do you want to:–

  • communicate news?
  • build a corporate identity?
  • distribute information?
  • provide a live information source?
  • purchase/find best-buys?
  • sell – advertise, auction, shopping basket?
  • get people to call you?

Each of these is likely to require a different approach.

For this site, for example, the most wanted response is an invitation to carry out some work. Next most wanted result – contributing long term to the most wanted response – is for many people in organisations to know of the site and recognise the potential benefit of working with the Brefi Group. That's why we also publish newsletters and include refer-a-friend and bookmark buttons on the web site.

What is your most wanted response? Give us a call.

What might the Internet do for you?

Beware: The Internet will bring great opportunities for promoting and selling products and services, for improving procurement and internal processes. It will also bring greater price comparison and move more products and services into commodities. The Internet is likely to lead to greater innovation and LOWER prices – and as a result LOWER profits for many. Long term higher profits can only be achieved if you can differentiate from your competitors.

It is too late to ignore it.
