Releasing human potential: Our mission is to help individuals and teams in organisations discover and achieve their potential so that they can become more effective with less stress.
May I introduce myself; I am Richard Winfield, the founder of Brefi Group.
Ever since I was at school I have been passionate about people, systems and business. I took an active role in supporting extra curricular activities at school and then came home and read my father's Financial Times. Throughout my career I have contributed to professional organisations, community building and getting systems changed to make things better, and I am am continually analysing, simplifying and improving. I remain committed to setting people free to achieve their untapped potential and .
In the 1970s I was a successful transport planner, involved in some of the leading projects in urban, rural and automated public transport systems and policy. In those days I analysed big systems – the transport systems of towns, counties and regions – and set people free by enabling them to travel!
I became increasingly interested in the business and management side of transport, so went back to university to obtain an MSc in management.
On graduation in 1982 I established the management consultancy that is now Brefi Group.
Along the way I was also involved in several start-ups and launched a successful newspaper publishing group.
For three years in the 1990s I worked in-house for an international automotive engineering company, where I was responsible for developing the divisional directors and senior management teams – and became a frequent commuter across the Atlantic.
Over the last 20 years I have studied under many of the thought leaders in NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP), I have studied leadership at the Disney Institute and have followed an active programme of personal and professional development.
Initially I offered management development consultancy, but inevitably this expanded into team coaching, facilitation and then training.
We have found that individual and team coaching have provided the required input to help individuals, teams and organisations achieve the success they desire.
Coaching brings benefits in business, personally and socially. And working with leaders and high fliers achieves the greatest leverage.
In a time when organisations need continually to adapt to change, coaching is the most effective way to develop managers, teams and individuals to achieve their potential.
This is one of the reasons that we have applied our expertise to develop coach training programs for developing countries.
I am supported by a team of highly qualified and effective associates, who also have MBA business experience and are trained in the psychology of change. Many of our associates are also qualified coaches. (See Associates)
Because we are consultancy led, we excel at identifying and interpreting our clients' needs; all our custom designed programs focus effectively on strategy and agreed outcomes.
With our roots in consultancy and a focus on processes, we have particular skills in designing and delivering innovative developmental training programmes.
Brefi Group incorporates all aspects of my experience, together with a tremendous resource of materials that we have developed for clients. After all, we have been at it for nearly thirty years!
We operate internationally, with extensive experience in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and in Africa. We understand the public and voluntary sector, international business and the professions.
In 2001 we launched our on-line newsletter, CorporateCoach; there are now more than 1,000 articles in our archive.
In 2005 we launched an on-line training needs analysis, BuddyCoach™.
In 2009 Brefi Group launched the Director Development Centre to focus on corporate governance and improving board effectiveness through performance evaluation, director appraisal and coaching.
In 2010 we launched the ASEC School of Executive Coaching to design, license and deliver coach training programs in Asia, Africa and the Middle East to international standards.
We believe that change arises within individuals and teams as they notice and appreciate changing reality.

Brefi Group operates through a network of associates, most of whom have studied NLP in depth, and have worked personally with founder and chief executive Richard Winfield. Richard remains responsible for the design and quality control of all activities.
